It's about tone and toner

Updated: Jul 26, 2021

January starts out with the best intentions – New Year’s resolutions. But it’s only mid-January, and like most people, you may already find yourself in a resolution slump. You may have lost that positive tone, that pep in your step, that resilient determination.

The purpose of a resolution is to change an undesired behavior or accomplish a goal to improve your life. But ask around, and you’ll find that most resolutions evaporate before February even begins.

So, let’s get back to the basics to make change and be specific. Pinpoint what you want to change and then take simple and doable steps to get there. We know that adding more stress to your already stressful life, isn’t going to motivate you when you’re in that slump.

For example, let’s say you want to live a more healthful lifestyle. That’s a hefty goal with lots of moving parts – your diet, routines, exercise, mindset and so on. What’s an easy positive step that is manageable?

A simple change towards benefiting your largest organ – your skin – is to add one step to your cleanse and moisturize routine. Balance your skin. Using a toner in between your washing and hydrating steps, preps your skin to receive full moisturizing benefits, balances your pH levels, calms irritations and helps to close pores and tighten cell gaps.

It could be as simple as using witch hazel, a natural product made for the bark and stems of the Hamamelis Virginiana plant. Witch hazel is budget-friendly, an effective toner with no frills. Apply it twice daily with a cotton pad (upward strokes) or by using a small spray bottle. Test which application fits your skin routine by using the cotton pad application to see if any residue or impurities remain after cleansing. If your cotton pad is picking up residue, your cleanser is not fully effective and might need to be replaced with one better able to fully clean your skin.

Want something a little more luxurious? Something that targets your specific skin issue? Deb has a few favorite toners, and she can help you find one that best suits your needs. The right toner is a drink of water for your skin and primes your skin to readily accept treatments and moisturizers.

Dermalogica’s Multi-Active Toner is a hydrating spray toner for all skin conditions. Ultracalming™ Mist is a redness-reducing spray toner. Antioxidant Hydramistis a flash-firming antioxidant toning mist with a light clove aroma.

Éminence Organics’ Stone Crop Hydrating Mist is healing, hydrating and helps minimize hyperpigmentation. Red Currant Mattifying Mist protects against the early signs of aging and Sweet Red Rose Tonique moisturizes as it calms and tones sensitive skin.

Keep it simple is a good life recommendation – resolution or not. Set your 2019 tone with a little spritz of balance by adding a minute and a toner to your daily skin care routine. Your skin will love it.

Connect with Deb or schedule a skin care appointment to find out which toner is best for you.
